Survey shows mentally ill receive poor guidance on sexual health
Sexual health guidance is low among people with serious mental illnesses, according to research by the University of East Anglia. The UEA’s School of Nursing and Midwifery conducted a survey of around 300 mental health workers. Results show that although 80 per cent agree that promoting sexual health is an important part of their role, only 30 per cent routinely discuss sexual health issues with service users.
Policy makers and mental health services are being asked to take action to ensure that people with serious mental illnesses are given more guidance and information on sexual health issues.
The survey was completed by 283 professionals included registered nurses psychiatrists, psychologists, occupational therapists and social workers.
